Breaking: Bauchi-State Reports Zero Cholera-Cases In 2024 Despite NCDC Watch-List (Details)

The Bauchi State Government has announced that despite being under the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) watch list, the state has not reported any cases of cholera in 2024.

In a phone interview with DAILY POST, Health Commissioner Dr. Adamu Umar Sambo clarified that although the NCDC included Bauchi among states with reported cholera cases this year, no cases have been confirmed in the state.

“While 30 suspected cases were recorded in Itas/Gadau LGA in January, all tested negative,” Dr. Sambo stated confidently. “Since the beginning of 2024, we have not had any reported or confirmed cases of cholera in Bauchi State.”

He added that the suspected cases turned out to be non-cholera. “We are currently focused on maintaining control measures and educating the public about personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, water hygiene, and other health issues.”

Dr. Sambo highlighted ongoing collaborations with BASEPA and other relevant agencies to improve drainage systems and prevent water contamination. “We are working with all relevant agencies to prevent an outbreak,” he concluded.

Previously, the NCDC warned of a rising trend in cholera cases across Nigeria as the rainy season intensifies. From January 1 to June 11, 2024, the NCDC reported 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cholera cases, including 30 deaths, across 96 local government areas in 30 states. The top contributing states include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos.
