The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially closed all land borders connecting Nigeria with Niger Republic in response to the recent coup d’état in the West African country.

The acting Controller General of NCS, Bashir Adewale, made this announcement on Friday during a visit to the Jibia border in Katsina.

Mr. Adewale stated that the decision to fully block the borders was in compliance with the directive of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to suspend the movement of cargo until further notice.

He also mentioned that measures would be taken to ensure full compliance, including sensitizing the border communities.

The closure was made in the interest of maintaining peace and stability between the two countries, according to the acting controller general, who also discussed the matter with the deputy governor of Katsina state.

Following the military coup in Niger Republic on June 27, ECOWAS had enforced a no-flight zone over the country and imposed sanctions on the coup plotters, including suspension of trade, diplomacy, and financial services, and declaration of a no-fly zone over Niger.

ECOWAS gave the coup plotters one week to relinquish power or face possible military intervention.

This decision to close air and land borders is seen as a crucial response to the recent coup, which has caused significant unrest in the country and poses a threat to political stability in the region.
