Bello was set to face charges involving an alleged N80.2 billion fraud, but when the case was called, none of his lawyers appeared in court. Despite this, EFCC counsel, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argued that Bello’s plea could still be taken, citing that the defendant’s physical presence was sufficient for the arraignment.

However, Justice Emeka Nwite rejected this argument, asserting that it would be unjust to proceed without the defendant’s legal team present. The judge highlighted that Bello’s lawyers had not been notified in advance of the court date, making it a violation of fair hearing principles.

Justice Nwite adjourned the case until December 13, 2024, directing that Bello’s legal team be properly notified, and the former governor should remain in EFCC custody until then.
