BREAKING: EU Considers Sanctions Against Niger Coup Leaders

The European Union (EU) intends to emulate the West African regional organization Ecowas by imposing similar sanctions on the junta that recently took control in Niger, according to the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell.

Speaking after a meeting of EU defense ministers in Toledo, Spain, Borrell stated that the EU aims to implement sanctions similar to those of Ecowas. An autonomous sanctions regime is being developed to address the situation.

Borrell announced that discussions will continue during an informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers on Thursday in Toledo, which will include the President of Nigeria and Ecowas President, Bola Tinubu.

Ecowas had issued sanctions on July 30, which included freezing Nigerien assets and imposing a ban on commercial flights. Nigeria, as a leading Ecowas member with a significant military force, has taken a central role in responding to the coup in Niger.

The EU, a major aid provider to Niger, had suspended security cooperation and financial support of €503 million ($552 million) for 2021-2024, aimed at enhancing governance and education. The EU has also recommended establishing its own sanctions regime against Niger.

The discussion on political instability in West Africa continued, prompted by the recent military coup in Gabon and the disputed elections there. Borrell expressed surprise at the developments and indicated that EU actions would be in line with those taken for Niger or other countries where European citizens require assistance. He also highlighted the broader regional instability affecting Central African Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and potentially Gabon. The EU’s approach to policies in these countries will be reviewed.

Margarita Robles, Spain’s Minister of Defence, emphasized Spain’s analysis of the situations in Niger and Gabon as the EU presidency holder. She underscored the importance of a comprehensive perspective when determining the future of military missions, particularly those involving Spain’s troops stationed in Mali.
