BREAKING: Gabon President Sends Message To ‘Friends’ Over Coup

Gabon’s President Ali Bongo has surfaced in a video, urging his “friends” to raise their voices, following a coup orchestrated by military officers in the oil-rich Central African nation.

In the video, posted on social media, Bongo appeared concerned as he conveyed his message: “I’m sending a message to all friends that we have all over the world to tell them to make noise for (…) the people here who arrested me and my family.” The source and timing of the video remain unclear.

Earlier, a group of Gabonese military officers took to television to declare the end of the current regime and the nullification of Bongo’s election. During this broadcast, sounds of gunfire echoed through the streets of Gabon’s capital, Libreville.

As the officers announced the annulment of the election results, one among them stated that “all the institutions of the republic” had been dissolved. The statement was delivered by an officer alongside a contingent of about twelve army colonels, elite Republican Guard members, regular soldiers, and others.

This move transpired shortly after the national election authority had declared Bongo victorious in the Saturday election, securing a third term with 64.27 percent of the vote.
