Breaking: Nigeria Customs Intercepts Record 16 Containers Packed With Illegal Drugs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Tincan Island Command has intercepted 16 containers filled with illegal substances, unregistered pharmaceuticals, and other contraband items, with a combined duty-paid value of N4 billion. Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Apapa, Lagos, Customs Area Controller Dera Nnadi revealed that the command has also collected a record-breaking N1.046 trillion in revenue from January to November 7, marking the first time the command has reached this milestone. He credited this achievement to strong collaboration with stakeholders.

“As of today, November 7, 2024, we are pleased to announce that the command has generated N1.046 trillion,” Nnadi said.

Thirteen of the seized containers containing illegal drugs will be handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Nnadi explained that these containers were inspected by multiple agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Providing further details on the seized items, Nnadi disclosed that some containers were filled with shipments of cough syrups containing codeine, barcadin, and broncleer, packaged in various bottle sizes. Additionally, the containers included 420 cartons of Royal 225 (Tapentadol HCL 125mg and Carisoprodol BP 100mg), 200 cartons of 5mg Benzhexol Tablets, as well as multiple packets of cannabis sativa, weighing a combined 340 kg.

Other goods in the seized containers included ceiling fans, deluxe chili cutters, stainless steel blenders, and Biomal Artesunate Injections.

Nnadi noted that these shipments originated from countries like India, the United Kingdom, and Canada. On October 2, the command also handed over 684 packets of cannabis indica valued at N682 million.

The Customs chief dedicated the success to Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi and the officers of his command. He emphasized the Tincan Command’s commitment to combatting the illegal importation of unregistered pharmaceuticals by partnering with local and international security agencies.

“With the holiday season approaching, we assure compliant traders of efficient cargo clearance,” he added, warning those who might attempt to breach regulations that the command is prepared to enforce the law.
