The proposed amendments aim to modify the 1999 Constitution to incorporate the following provisions:
- Rotation of the office of the President among the six Geo-political Zones, limiting each state to two terms of four years each, to ensure inclusivity, participation, and representation in Nigeria’s democracy. Additionally, no zone can produce another President until all other zones have had their turn.
- Rotation of the governorship office among the three Senatorial Zones within each state to promote inclusivity and representation in state development. Similarly, a Senatorial Zone that has produced a governor cannot do so again until the other zones have had their opportunity.
- Rotation of senatorial elections among all federal constituencies within the senatorial zone to promote inclusivity and representation in constituencies and drive social progress and development. Additionally, a federal constituency that has produced a senator cannot do so again until all other constituencies have had their turn.
- Prohibition on local governments that have already produced a Member of the House of Representatives from doing so again until all other local governments in the federal constituency have had their chance. However, this provision applies only after the elected representative has completed a full term validated by the electorate through an election.
These proposed amendments aim to foster equitable distribution of political opportunities and representation across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
