BREAKING: Senate Takes Strong Decision On Bill Seeking To Allow Parties Replace NASS Members

The Senate has rejected a Bill proposing amendments to the Electoral Act of 2022 that sought to allow political parties to nominate and replace validly elected candidates in the event of resignation, death, or vacancy in the National Assembly (NASS) and State Assemblies.

Senator Karimi Sunday, the sponsor of the bill representing Kogi West Senatorial District, argued that the amendment aimed to permit political parties that won an election to nominate and replace candidates in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assemblies in the event of a vacancy due to the death or resignation of the candidate during their term in office.

He contended that this would prevent the waste of public resources on conducting fresh elections.

However, the bill failed to garner sufficient support among his colleagues, and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, offered Senator Sunday the option to withdraw or amend the bill, which he declined.

The bill was subsequently rejected in a voice vote.
