BREAKING: Tension As President’s Residence Sealed Off With No Reason

Members of the elite Presidential Guard blocked access to the residence and offices of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday, according to a source close to Bazoum. The reason for the blockade remains unclear.

Despite the blockage, there were no signs of abnormal military deployment or gunfire in the area. Traffic in the vicinity was normal, as observed by an AFP journalist.

President Bazoum, who was democratically elected in 2021, has close ties with France. Niger has a history of political instability, having experienced four coups since gaining independence from France in 1960, along with several other attempted power grabs.

The last coup took place in February 2010, overthrowing then President Mamadou Tandja. Additionally, there were attempted coups on March 31, 2021, just before Bazoum’s inauguration, and another attempt in March of the current year while the president was in Turkey.

Niger faces challenges, including ongoing jihadist campaigns in the southwest and southeast regions. The country ranks low in the UN’s Human Development Index and is characterized by desert landscapes. Its population has surged to 22.4 million, driven by a high birthrate.

Despite the uncertain situation, the authorities have not issued any public statements on the recent incident involving the blockade of the President’s residence and offices.
