Breaking The Silence: Federal Government’s Response To NLC, TUC
Amidst escalating tensions over unmet agreements and economic hardships, the Federal Government responded to the threat of a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), asserting that accusations of unfulfilled promises are unfounded…. In a bid to avert the looming strike, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged the labour unions to engage in dialogue with the government rather than resorting to industrial action.
He emphasized the importance of reaching amicable resolutions through round-table discussions, highlighting that striking would not be beneficial to either party.
The labour unions had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, citing grievances over the non-implementation of a 16-point agreement signed on October 2, 2023.
The leadership of both the NLC and TUC expressed disappointment over the government’s perceived indifference to the suffering and hardship faced by Nigerians.
Addressing the concerns raised, Minister Idris stated, “We appeal to labour to always see reason with the government. It is not in the government’s interest for labour to continue to go on strike.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to keeping its promises and willingness to engage in dialogue to resolve any outstanding issues.
He further urged the labour unions to come to the table for discussions, stating, “Government is ever ready to listen to labour so that we can have an amicable resolution to all these concerns.”
As tensions simmer, the call for dialogue underscores the importance of constructive engagement in resolving differences and working towards a mutually beneficial outcome.
