The U.S. Department of Justice announced that the duo, based in Chicago suburbs, engaged in inheritance and romance fraud schemes to deceive their victims. According to the release, Ibekie and Aniukwu lured victims with false claims of substantial inheritances, requiring upfront payments to secure the funds. Additionally, they used fake online romances to manipulate victims into sending money.

Investigations revealed that the pair also executed a business email compromise scheme targeting corporate accounts. Their activities led to over $3.5 million in losses.

After being charged with 14 counts, including wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering, Ibekie was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Aniukwu, who pled guilty last year to similar charges, was sentenced to 10 years.

Meanwhile, their accomplice, Jennifer Gosha, a U.S. citizen, is awaiting sentencing in December after pleading guilty to related charges.

This case highlights the coordinated efforts of law enforcement to combat online fraud and protect vulnerable individuals from cybercriminals.
