Buhari Directs Amaechi To Link Lekki Deep Seaport To Rail
Transportation Minister Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi got a presidential directive yesterday to come up with a memorandum to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on how to link the Lekki Deep Sea Port with the railway network.
President Muhammadu gave the directive after inspecting the deep seaport project in Lagos State.
As part of his engagements in Lagos, the President inspected the rate of work done at the first Deep Sea Port in Nigeria, located within the Lagos Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) in Lagos.
In the course of the inspection, he received firm assurances that the port, which has a concession period of 45 years and sits on a 90-hectare land, would be completed on schedule by September.
President Buhari said he was delighted with the high level of work that has been done at the port, which is projected to create about 170,000 jobs when completed.

He was accompanied by All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart and presidential aspirant Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Amaechi, his counterpart in the Ministry of Information, Lai Muhammed, some governors, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr Bashir Jamoh, the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and other officials.
Speaking with reporters, Amaechi stressed the need to relocate about 5, 000 inhabitants around the Lekki Deep Seaport to a convenient place.
He said: “I think relocation would be the best. You don’t just dislodge people from their natural environment even though the law gives you the power. You must take into consideration those who leave around the area.
“I want to have a conversation with the Governor of Lagos State on what happened because we need to acquire all that land, which is about 1, 000 hectares.”
On when the port will be ready, he said: “The port is almost ready. If not for the equipment, they can actually get this place ready before June.
“They said the equipment will arrive by June 2022 and installation will take them till September. It can be commissioned in September.”
