Buhari Reacts As Shehu Is Confirmed Dead
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has joined the nation in grieving the loss of the esteemed Professor of medicine and, until his passing, Chairman of the board of the Nigerian Institute of Virology, Umaru Shehu.
In a heartfelt message of condolence to the family of the departed, the government, people of Borno State, and the entire nation, Buhari paid a profound tribute to the late Professor, stating that he embodied the highest ideals of humanity.
“Throughout his extensive medical career, he saved countless lives and played a crucial role in shaping many of the progressive policies in the health sector of the country. May Allah bless his soul,” the former President conveyed.
Professor Shehu passed away on Monday at the age of 97. This information was shared in a statement by Dr. Bulama Gubio, the Secretary of the Borno Elders Forum, on Monday in Maiduguri.
Gubio further noted that Shehu, a distinguished Professor of Medicine, breathed his last in the early hours of Monday.
Professor Shehu held the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 1978 to 1980. He also held visiting professorships at various universities, including the School of Medicine, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, U.S. from 1976 to 1977.
He was a foundational fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the West African College of Physicians, the Nigerian Academy of Science, and the Faculty of Community Medicine (Nigeria).
In 1991, Shehu was appointed Honorary Consultant Physician, and he was granted the title of Professor Emeritus in 2000.
