Established in June 2007, the BPP has played a crucial role in combating corruption, especially in public procurement processes, contract inflation, and the diversion of public funds. According to Dr. Adedokun, the agency has been instrumental in ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the awarding and execution of contracts across the country.

Over the past 17 years, the BPP has saved the nation at least N40 billion annually by preventing funds from being siphoned off into private pockets. This total, according to the agency’s price intelligence unit, adds up to a remarkable N1.9 trillion in public funds that have been safeguarded.

Additionally, the BPP has supported the federal government’s revenue generation efforts by working closely with agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Pension Commission (PENCOM).

Despite these successes, Dr. Adedokun expressed concerns over the agency’s inadequate budget allocation for 2025. While the BPP proposed a capital vote of N63.5 billion, it was allotted only N1.57 billion, a figure that he argued would not address the bureau’s pressing needs, such as accommodating staff and replacing aging project monitoring vehicles purchased in 2008.

The Senate committee members raised concerns about the BPP’s ability to monitor the contract awards and execution of over 800 government agencies with just 158 employees. As a result, the committee has directed the BPP to include plans for additional staffing in its 2025 budget.
