Call For Smartphone Ban In Universities – Academic

Dr. Saeed Olorunnisola, the acting Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, Kwara State, has called on both federal and state governments to implement a ban on smartphone usage in secondary and tertiary educational institutions.

During his presentation at the second national symposium organized by the Mission for the Eradication of Examination Malpractice in Osogbo, Osun State, Olorunnisola emphasized that such a prohibition would significantly improve students’ focus in classroom settings.

While discussing the theme, “Effects of Examination Malpractices on Education and National Development,” he expressed concern over social media’s detrimental impact on student concentration, noting that it poses a significant distraction not only in secondary schools but even more so in universities.

“Social media is a major distraction in secondary education, with tertiary institutions facing even greater challenges. Students often exhibit a lack of interest in their studies, opting to take photos of their notes instead of reading them, as they are frequently absorbed in social media activities,” he stated.

Olorunnisola argued that the current misuse of technology necessitates decisive action, citing an unnamed university that had successfully prohibited mobile phone usage among undergraduates, leading to enhanced concentration for its students.

Additionally, Prof. Buniyameen Abdulkareem, Chairman of the MEEM Board of Trustees, remarked on the symposium’s purpose. Representing a non-governmental organization established by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria B-Zone, he indicated that the event aimed to engage policymakers, students, and educators on the pressing issue of the rising incidence of examination malpractice in the country.
