Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has recorded his 100th Premier League appearance for Fulham, achieving the milestone despite the club’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday, October 10.

The Nigerian international became the 28th player to make 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham and the second Nigerian to reach the landmark, following his international teammate Alex Iwobi, who has made 103 league appearances for the London club.

According to reports, the 26-year-old centre-back played the full 90 minutes against Ipswich, marking his sixth league appearance of the season.

Bassey has scored three goals and provided one assist in his 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham, recording 8,411 minutes of playing time. Since joining the club from Ajax in July 2023, he has made 108 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals.

Before moving to Fulham, Bassey featured for Scottish side Rangers and Dutch club Ajax after progressing through Leicester City’s academy. He made 65 appearances for Rangers and 39 for Ajax before his move to England.

His latest achievement also places him among Nigerian footballers who have reached 100 Premier League appearances. According to statistics attributed to Transfermarkt, Bassey became the 17th Nigerian player to attain the milestone.

Iwobi leads the list with 320 appearances, followed by Shola Ameobi with 299, Nwankwo Kanu with 272, Yakubu Aiyegbeni with 252 and John Obi Mikel with 249. Other Nigerians who have reached the landmark include Joseph Yobo, Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ola Aina.

Despite Bassey’s personal achievement, Fulham endured a disappointing outing after surrendering an early second-half lead to lose all three points.

Ryan Sessegnon put Fulham ahead in the 55th minute, but Ipswich mounted a late comeback, with Abdoul Ouattara equalising in the 88th minute before captain Dara O’Shea scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

Iwobi also started the match but was replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 87th minute, shortly before Ipswich completed their comeback.

The defeat compounded Fulham’s difficult start to the campaign, leaving the club with two points from six matches and increasing the pressure on head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

For Bassey, however, the appearance milestone represents a notable personal achievement as he continues to establish himself in English football.
