CBN Slashes FX Duty Rates To Boost Importer Confidence

According to reports from the official trade portal of the Nigeria Customs Service, the exchange rate for calculating customs duties has been slashed by 5.3%. This adjustment comes after a period of relative stability in the exchange rate between the Naira and the United States dollar.
Previously set at N1,630.159 per dollar, the new rate now stands at N1,544.081 per dollar. This translates to a savings of N86.08 per dollar for importers when clearing their goods through the ports.
The decision reflects the CBN’s commitment to ensuring that import duties accurately reflect the prevailing exchange rate, ultimately aiming to alleviate financial burdens on companies importing goods. By providing a more predictable and stable environment for international trade, the CBN seeks to boost confidence among importers and promote economic growth.
The move follows a circular issued by the CBN on February 23, 2024, addressing concerns from importers regarding fluctuating import duty. Acknowledging market volatility and price distortions resulting from the liberalization of the foreign exchange market, the circular aims to address uncertainties caused by fluctuating exchange rates affecting duty calculations.
Overall, the reduction in FX duty rates marks a positive step towards creating a conducive business environment in Nigeria, fostering investor confidence, and supporting the growth of the economy.
