Chief Kokori Dies On 80th Birthday

Kokori

Renowned elder statesman and former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Chief Frank Kokori, has passed away. He breathed his last at exactly 1:30 am on Thursday, December 7, 2023, coincidentally on his 80th birthday.

The news was received in the early hours of Thursday, disclosed by Chief Kokori’s personal assistant, Atawada Barry Oke, around 2:30 am. Chief Kokori’s health had deteriorated since Monday, rendering him unable to engage with those around him as he remained on life support.

Kokori’s demise follows his distress call from his hospital bed on November 9, 2023, where he decried neglect and abandonment despite his significant contributions to the democratic development of the country. The octogenarian had been battling a kidney-related ailment at Mount Horeb Clinic in Warri, Delta State.

In his earlier call, Kokori had lamented being left alone in the hospital, with the air conditioner turned off, possibly due to a shortage of diesel. He expressed a willingness to undergo top-notch medical treatment abroad, urging the Federal Government, particularly President Bola Tinubu, with whom he fought against the military junta in the early ’90s, to facilitate the process.

His plea garnered attention, leading to visits from dignitaries such as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and a delegation from former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege. Despite these efforts, Chief Kokori’s health continued to decline, culminating in his passing on the morning of his 80th birthday.
