Counsel – Why Shaibu Is ‘Pausing’ Petition Against Chief Judge, Okungbowa

According to Emwanta, Shaibu is currently assessing his options in light of the appeals he has received from various quarters urging him to pause his petition against the Chief Judge.

Last week, Shaibu, through Emwanta, had requested a complaint form from the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, in order to formally petition Justice Okungbowa.

The Edo State House had requested the Chief Judge to establish a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of perjury and leaking of government secrets against Shaibu. The panel, chaired by retired Justice S.A. Omonuwa, completed its probe on April 5 and submitted its report to the Assembly on April 8.

Following the probe report, the Assembly declared Shaibu guilty of leaking government secrets and subsequently impeached him. However, Shaibu contested his removal, asserting its illegality and vowing to challenge it legally.

Regarding the progress of Shaibu’s petition against Justice Okungbowa, Emwanta noted that there has been no response from the CJN to Shaibu’s request for a formal complaint against the state Chief Judge. Emwanta indicated that there are ongoing efforts to halt further action against the Edo Chief Judge due to appeals from various quarters.

However, Emwanta clarified that Shaibu has not yet decided to drop his complaint but is considering the appeals received, suggesting a temporary pause in the proceedings.
