The ruling comes as a significant step in cracking down on unauthorized financial activities in the region.
Lawan’s conviction, announced through an official statement from the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), underscores the seriousness with which regulatory bodies are approaching financial crimes. According to the EFCC, Lawan was found guilty of engaging in unauthorized currency exchange between 2007 and 2024, contravening Sections 57(5) and 59 of the Bank and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020.
During the trial, Lawan pleaded guilty to the lone count against him, admitting to carrying out bureau de change operations without the necessary license. The prosecution, led by Faruku Muhammad and A.D Aliyu, emphasized the need for a decisive sentence to deter similar offenses in the future. Conversely, Lawan’s defense, represented by H. Waziri, pleaded for leniency, urging the court to consider mitigating factors.
In delivering the verdict, Justice Dagat acknowledged Lawan’s guilty plea but stressed the importance of upholding financial regulations. Alongside the one-year prison term, Lawan was fined N100,000.00, providing a deterrent against unauthorized financial activities while also allowing for the possibility of rehabilitation.
This ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to legal and regulatory frameworks in financial transactions. It underscores the commitment of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies to uphold the integrity of the financial system and protect the interests of the public. As efforts continue to combat financial crimes, individuals and entities are urged to operate within the confines of the law to ensure a transparent and secure financial environment for all.
