Commissioner of Police CP. Shawulu Danmamman revealed that the arrested vandals were caught red-handed with a trailer loaded with stolen railway tracks and slippers, believed to have been pilfered from Katarma village in Kaduna.

The interception of the suspects by military personnel at Sarkin-Pawa underscores the collaborative effort to combat criminal activities and safeguard critical infrastructure.

CP. Danmamman reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Niger State Police Command to curbing crime and ensuring public safety.

Among the suspects, Adekunle Saheed of Oyo State and Saifullahi Umar of Katsina State provided conflicting accounts regarding their involvement in the illicit operation. While Saheed professed ignorance about the trailer’s contents, Umar claimed he was merely facilitating its transport to the designated destination.

The incident sheds light on the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s railway sector, including theft and vandalism, hampering efforts to modernize and expand the nation’s rail network.

Recent reports of rampant theft, such as the pilferage of over 150,000 rail clips nationwide between 2022 and 2023, underscore the urgent need for concerted action to safeguard critical infrastructure and combat organized crime.

Moreover, law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat criminal elements across the state, with notable successes including the recovery of firearms and apprehension of suspects involved in various illicit activities.

The crackdown on railway vandals marks a significant step in protecting vital infrastructure and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s transportation network.
