In a statement shared on Tuesday, Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected these allegations, describing them as unfounded and damaging. Foreign Minister Olushegun Bakari confirmed the summoning of Niger’s chargé d’affaires, demanding an explanation for the claims.

“These accusations are baseless and unacceptable,” the ministry stated on its official X account, formerly Twitter. A letter of protest was also sent, emphasizing Benin’s commitment to peace and regional collaboration.

The accusations stem from Tchiani’s Christmas address, where he claimed that Benin serves as a haven for terrorists plotting to destabilize Niger. This comes against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions following Niger’s July 2023 coup, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

Strained Diplomatic Ties

Benin and Niger have faced escalating disputes in recent years over border closures, oil exports, and trade. However, there were recent signs of reconciliation, including the appointment of new ambassadors.

Benin reiterated its commitment to fostering positive relations, cautioning that such baseless accusations could threaten regional peace. “Benin is dedicated to dialogue and mutual cooperation,” the ministry affirmed.

Nigeria Denies Similar Claims

General Tchiani’s address also accused Nigeria of hosting a French military base intended to destabilize Niger—a claim strongly denied by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. He assured that Nigeria remains committed to fostering stability in the region and is open to dialogue with Niger.
