The crash occurred in a mountainous area of East Azerbaijan province amid foggy conditions. Also on board were East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader to East Azerbaijan. The convoy included three helicopters, two of which were carrying ministers and officials.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin denied any US involvement in the crash, stating, “The United States had no part to play in that crash. That’s a fact, plain and simple.” He suggested several potential causes, such as mechanical failure or pilot error, but emphasized that there is no clear indication of the crash’s cause. “We continue to monitor the situation but we don’t have any insights into the cause of the accident,” he added.
