ECOWAS Expresses Alarm Over Senegal Presidential Election Postponement
In a surprising turn of events, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced its concern following the abrupt and indefinite postponement of the Senegal presidential election, originally scheduled for February 25….READ MORE
The announcement by Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, came just hours before the official start of campaigning.
President Sall revealed that he signed a decree nullifying the initial election date due to ongoing investigations into the integrity of two Constitutional Council judges involved in the election process. In response, he pledged to initiate an open national dialogue to ensure conditions for a free, transparent, and inclusive election, although a new date remains unspecified.
This unprecedented delay in a Senegalese presidential election arises from a dispute between the National Assembly and the Constitutional Court over the rejection of candidates. ECOWAS, through a communique issued on Sunday morning, urged Senegal’s authorities to promptly determine a new date for the postponed elections.
The communique emphasized, “The ECOWAS Commission expresses concern over the circumstances that have led to the postponement of the elections and appeals to the competent authorities to expedite the various processes to set a new date for the elections.” Additionally, ECOWAS called upon the political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration to ensure transparent, inclusive, and credible elections.
While acknowledging President Macky Sall’s decision not to seek another term and commending him for upholding Senegal’s democratic tradition, ECOWAS encouraged him to continue defending and protecting the nation’s longstanding commitment to democracy.
