ECOWAS Keeps Borders Open For Burkina Faso, Mali, And Niger Despite Withdrawal

In an official statement, ECOWAS confirmed that the withdrawal of the three nations became effective on the stated date but assured that their passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo will remain valid for travel within the region.

Trade and economic activities will continue under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, allowing goods and services from these countries to flow freely. Furthermore, citizens from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will retain visa-free access, residence, and establishment rights across ECOWAS states.

ECOWAS also urged relevant authorities within and outside of ECOWAS member states to recognize these citizens’ documents and continue treating goods and services from these nations in accordance with the existing trade agreements.

A special committee has been set up to discuss future engagements with the three countries, ensuring that the withdrawal process does not negatively impact cross-border movement and trade for the millions of people who rely on them. This arrangement will remain in place until a full determination of future relations with the three countries is made by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
