Edo 2024: Reason Why PDP’s Legacy Group Rejected Obaseki’s Anointed Candidate

As the gubernatorial election in Edo State looms about a year ahead, internal strife is fracturing the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Legacy Group within the party has vowed to oppose any candidate endorsed by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The State Secretary of the party, Mr. Hilary Otsu, conveyed this stance in an interview in Benin, the state capital.

He revealed that members of the Legacy Group, led by Chief Dan Orbih, the party’s South South national zonal Vice Chairman, are steadfast in their decision not to support the Governor’s preferred candidate.

This isn’t the first time the group has opposed candidates backed by Obaseki, as they worked against them during the recent general elections, leading to significant losses for the PDP in parts of Edo central and south.

Otsu firmly stated that Obaseki’s endorsement of a Lagos-based lawyer, Asue Ighodalo, as the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate for next year’s election will not gain traction. He emphasized that Edo residents will not accept another “outsider” from Lagos to lead the state after Obaseki, who himself was recruited from Lagos by former governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

The Edo PDP Secretary, while expressing confidence in the party’s resilience, insisted that the Legacy Group will nominate the gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates for the 2024 election.

He commented, “Governor Obaseki does not have the kind of goodwill needed to promote an unknown stranger in Edo State. When Oshiomole did it with him, Oshiomole had optimal goodwill and acceptance. If Edo people are given a choice today, they will vote against any candidate that Governor Obaseki supports.”

Otsu alleged that it was widely known that some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were compromised in the processes that favored Obaseki’s supported candidates during the recent elections. He pointed out that these candidates were unpopular due to the questionable methods that led to their selection.

In summary, Otsu highlighted the contrast with previous years when the PDP, without Obaseki, held a stronger position in Edo State, securing multiple Senate seats and House of Representatives seats.
