Edo Governor Okpebholo Suspends Hiring, Launches Investigation Into Obaseki’s Appointments

in a statement on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

In addition to the suspension, Governor Okpebholo has ordered a comprehensive review of all recruitment exercises conducted by the Godwin Obaseki-led administration between May and November 2024.

A notice signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Umar Ikhilor, revealed that the governor had received reports about covert recruitment activities by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The notice claimed that some of these bodies had been issuing backdated employment letters to favored individuals without following due process.

The statement read: “The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has been informed of secretive activities within some Commissions, Boards, Parastatals, and Government Agencies in the state. Preliminary investigations show that these bodies have continued to issue backdated employment letters to their associates, bypassing proper procedures.

“To clarify, this administration is committed to fairness and equity, and all employment processes should be merit-based, competitive, and open to all Edo indigenes. Therefore, to address this issue, the Governor has directed the immediate suspension of all recruitment activities and ordered a review of all appointments made since May 2024 by Commissions, Boards, Parastatals, and Government Agencies.

“Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are to comply with this directive,” the notice concluded.
