Edo Powers Up With New Mini-Grid, Plant Project

The Edo State Government has intensified efforts to improve electricity access and stimulate economic development with the approval of a 3-megawatt mini-grid generation licence for Halimatu Hospital Ltd. and continued oversight of the proposed 100-megawatt Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ologbo.

Speaking on the developments, Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, said the initiatives are in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision of strengthening infrastructure, attracting private-sector investment, enhancing healthcare services, and supporting industrial expansion across the state.

According to government officials, the 3MW mini-grid project, located in Okpella in Edo North Senatorial District, is expected to provide stable electricity to Halimatu Hospital while extending power supply to approximately 200 households and small businesses within the host community.

The commissioner noted that the project is being implemented under the Edo State Electricity Law 2025 (as amended), which provides a regulatory framework for electricity generation, distribution, licensing, and investment within the state.

Receiving the licence on behalf of Halimatu Hospital Ltd., Jonah Giwa praised the state government for creating a conducive environment for private-sector participation in the energy sector. He also reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to executing the project in accordance with established technical and sustainability standards.

Meanwhile, during an inspection of the proposed 100MW Independent Power Plant at Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Usenbo expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and reiterated the government’s determination to ensure the project is delivered on schedule.

He stated that the facility, when completed, would significantly enhance electricity supply, promote industrialisation, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen Edo State’s attractiveness to investors.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Engr. Dr. Stephen Uyiekpen, explained that the inspection was part of ongoing monitoring efforts aimed at assessing project progress, resolving implementation challenges, and ensuring critical milestones are achieved within the approved timeline.

During the tour of the facility, Operations Manager Luke Lee disclosed that the first phase of the project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of the year.

The Edo State Government maintained that both projects represent significant milestones in its broader strategy to improve energy access, upgrade infrastructure, and accelerate sustainable socio-economic development across the state.
