The National/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin has delivered a significant verdict, upholding the election of Hon. Ihonvbere Onozuanvbo Julius, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the representative for Owan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

This ruling follows the general election held on February 25th.

In a unanimous decision, the tribunal dismissed the petition lodged by Jimoh Iruokhaime Ojeiu and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both challenging Ihonvbere’s victory.

The tribunal concurred with the lead lawyer representing Ihonvbere, Mr. [Lawyer’s Name], who argued that Ojeiu’s petition was devoid of merit and should be rejected with punitive costs attached.

In response to this ruling, Counsel to the 1st Petitioners, Rasak Isenalume, Esq, expressed the role of lawyers in presenting cases and legal arguments based on the law.

He acknowledged the tribunal’s authority to make its determinations and highlighted the potential for further legal action.

On the other hand, Counsel to Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, 2nd Respondent, Famous Osawaru, who represented West Idahosa, SAN, praised the judgment as a masterclass, meticulously prepared and delivered. He viewed it as a victory for the constituents of Owan Federal Constituency.

Furthermore, Counsel to the APC, Victor Asumwan, esq, expressed satisfaction with the judgment, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law and the petitioners’ failure to substantiate claims of overvoting.

He considered the tribunal’s decision a reaffirmation of the electorate’s choice in favor of the APC in Owan East and West Constituency.
