EFCC Sounds Alarm: Nigerian Banking Sector Faces Escalating Fraud
In a stark warning, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised the alarm over the burgeoning wave of fraudulent activities engulfing the Nigerian banking sector, posing a significant threat to the economy and financial stability.
During the annual conference of the Association of Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria (ACAEBIN) held in Abuja, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the pressing need for heightened vigilance and concerted efforts to combat these nefarious practices plaguing the sector.
Under the theme “The role of internal auditor in promoting stability in the financial services sector and national economic growth,” the conference served as a platform to address the mounting challenges posed by fraudulent activities within the banking industry.
Representing the EFCC, Director of Internal Audit, Idowu Apejoye, stressed the pivotal role of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in safeguarding the integrity and trustworthiness of the sector amidst escalating fraudulent schemes.
Highlighting the indispensable role of the banking sector in driving economic growth and stability, Apejoye underscored the imperative for collective action to confront the rising tide of fraud. He emphasized that addressing fraudulent practices is paramount to preserving the sector’s credibility and sustaining its pivotal role as a catalyst for development.
Identifying both internal and external sources of fraud, Olukoyede elucidated on the multifaceted nature of banking fraud, ranging from misappropriation of deposits to sophisticated hacking and collusion. He expressed particular concern over the disturbing trend of collaboration between insiders and external parties to perpetrate fraudulent schemes, posing grave challenges to regulatory efforts.
In light of these threats, the EFCC urged stakeholders to redouble their efforts in implementing robust internal controls and enhancing collaboration to safeguard the integrity of the Nigerian banking sector against the scourge of fraud.
