EKEDC Alerts Customers To Rising Cyber Threats
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has issued a public advisory urging customers to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves against the growing wave of cyber threats…READ MORE…
In a statement signed by EKEDC’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, Babatunde Lasaki, the company emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness, particularly as digital platforms play an increasingly vital role in transactions and communication. Lasaki highlighted that cybercriminals are employing sophisticated techniques to exploit vulnerabilities, making it crucial for customers to stay informed and cautious.
The statement outlined several common cyber threats, including phishing attacks, social engineering scams, ransomware, and identity theft. Lasaki warned that fraudsters often use deceptive emails, text messages, or phone calls to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, account details, or payment information.
He further explained how attackers manipulate victims by impersonating EKEDC officials or posing as distressed family members to extract financial details or payments. Additionally, ransomware attacks, which involve malicious software locking users out of their devices until a ransom is paid, often occur when individuals unknowingly download infected files or click on harmful links.
“Cybercriminals also steal personal information, such as National Identification Numbers, bank details, or passwords, to impersonate victims for fraudulent activities. Weak or reused passwords across multiple accounts are particularly vulnerable to exploitation,” Lasaki warned.
To safeguard against these threats, EKEDC advised customers to adopt several best practices:
- Verify Authenticity: Double-check emails, texts, or calls claiming to be from EKEDC. The company will never request sensitive information like passwords or PINs.
- Create Strong Passwords: Use unique passwords that avoid easy-to-guess details like names, birthdates, or sequential numbers.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification step beyond your password.
- Update Devices Regularly: Ensure your devices and applications have the latest security patches.
- Avoid Public Wi-Fi: Conduct transactions on secure, private networks, as public Wi-Fi can expose sensitive data to attackers.
- Exercise Caution with Links and Attachments: Avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading unsolicited attachments, as they may contain malware or phishing traps.
As part of its commitment to customer safety, EKEDC has implemented robust cybersecurity measures to protect its digital platforms. Customers are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or scams involving EKEDC services through the company’s official channels.
This advisory serves as a reminder for customers to remain alert and adopt secure online practices to protect themselves from potential cyber threats.
