The legal action, which has ignited widespread public attention, comes in response to Akpabio’s scathing remarks, accusing Emefiele of various charges and economic mismanagement during his tenure at the CBN.
During a recent statement, Akpabio levied serious allegations against Emefiele, including claims of illegal possession of firearms and unauthorized printing of Naira notes, which he attributed to Nigeria’s current economic woes.
Furthermore, Akpabio pointed fingers at Emefiele’s policies and decisions, holding them accountable for the prevalent hunger and economic hardships endured by Nigerians today.
Akpabio’s comments also emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to rectifying what they perceive as damages inflicted by previous administrations, with a focus on ensuring national stability and food security.
In a bold move, Emefiele’s legal representative, Matthew Burkaa, issued a formal notice dated February 19, outlining the ex-CBN Governor’s demands. The notice demands a whopping N25 billion in compensation from Akpabio, along with a public apology for the damaging remarks deemed defamatory.
Warning of further legal repercussions should these demands not be met, Emefiele’s legal team has signaled their intent to pursue all necessary legal avenues to seek justice and redress for the alleged harm inflicted by Akpabio’s statements.
