The new Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has already set up a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to review Obaseki’s administration.

Earlier this month, on November 2, the EFCC detained five senior officials from Obaseki’s government, including the Accountant General, Julius Anelu, over allegations of significant withdrawals from the state treasury.

Obaseki has responded to these developments, asserting his willingness to cooperate with the EFCC. On November 8, he stated he had no fears about the investigations and was prepared to account for his actions as governor.

However, EFCC insiders disclosed that while the probe is ongoing, no direct evidence of misconduct has been linked to Obaseki so far.

“Investigations have begun, but he won’t be invited until substantial progress is made. Most transactions were delegated to others, and we are following leads on contracts and other financial activities during his tenure,” a source revealed.

Another source added that it is standard practice for the EFCC to monitor former governors after they leave office, ensuring they remain accessible during investigations.

“Placing former governors on a watchlist is routine. This ensures they don’t leave the country while under investigation,” the insider explained.
