Experts Warn Nigerians To Stay Calm Ahead Of Today’s Match
Do you suffer from hypertension? Are you deeply emotionally invested in football? Do you have any underlying health conditions? Experts caution individuals with such profiles to exercise caution as the Nigerian Super Eagles face off against the Cote d’Ivoire football team in the African Cup of Nations finals on Sunday….CONTINUE READING
Cardiologists have advised individuals with pre-existing heart conditions and those with strong emotional ties to football to either refrain from intense engagement or to manage their excitement during the match, taking breaks as necessary.
The warning follows the recent tragic deaths of four Nigerians after viewing the Nigeria-South Africa semi-final match last Wednesday.
Medical professionals highlight the susceptibility of such individuals to heightened emotions that could potentially trigger cardiac events, such as heart attacks or strokes, during moments of intense excitement.
Explaining further, experts suggest that individuals with a genetic predisposition may be at a heightened risk of adverse cardiac events when experiencing sudden emotional surges.
In a statement to Sunday Vanguard, Prof Augustine Odili, President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS), emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding each death, highlighting the potential role of acute emotional triggers in precipitating myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).
While autopsy results were not available, Odili underscored the significance of avoiding emotionally charged situations, particularly for those aware of their strong emotional connection to football events.
