A tragic road accident in the Aloma community of Kogi State’s Ofu Local Government Area resulted in the loss of fourteen lives and left thirteen others injured on Sunday. Eyewitnesses recounted that the accident occurred due to a head-on collision between the two vehicles. Thirteen occupants of the Hiace bus, including the driver, were fatally burnt as a fire engulfed the vehicle after the collision. Sadly, another victim passed away in the hospital, raising the death toll to fourteen.
Fortunately, all ten occupants of the Sienna bus survived the crash but sustained severe injuries. Villagers’ prompt intervention prevented the Sienna bus from catching fire, saving the occupants from further harm.
The accident site, near a bend close to the Government Science Secondary School in Aloma, was reportedly prone to overspeeding and potholes, which may have contributed to the collision.
Rescuers spent three hours extracting the Sienna bus driver, who suffered severe leg injuries. While the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State, Samuel Oyediji, confirmed the incident, he awaited a detailed report from the unit commander for further information.
The tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for vigilance while traveling.
