FG Allocates ₦2.75 Billion For Compensation Amid Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that the Federal Government will disburse ₦2.75 billion in compensation to individuals affected by the demolition exercise for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Umahi made this declaration during a stakeholders meeting held in Lagos State, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of those impacted by infrastructure development projects. He also hinted at additional compensation to be disbursed in the near future.
Meanwhile, the announcement comes amid controversy surrounding comments made by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the highway project. Obi criticized the demolition of businesses and residences in the project’s designated right of way, labeling it as insensitive and highlighting the loss of investments and jobs.
In response, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, rebuked Obi, labeling him as an “incurable hypocrite.” Onanuga pointed out that Obi had similarly demolished houses during his tenure as Anambra State Governor to facilitate road construction, without adequately compensating affected residents. He criticized Obi’s stance on the Lagos-Calabar highway project, accusing him of hypocrisy.
The controversy underscores the challenges associated with infrastructure development projects and the need for careful consideration of their impact on affected communities. The allocation of compensation funds by the Federal Government reflects a commitment to addressing the concerns of impacted individuals and mitigating the social and economic repercussions of development initiatives.
