FG Announces Crackdown On Irregular Migrants, Implements Amnesty Program Starting May 1

The Federal Government has announced plans to intensify actions against irregular migrants starting August 1, 2025. A three-month grace period will be provided, from May 1 to August 1, during which the new Expatriate Administration System will be implemented to facilitate compliance.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, shared this information during a meeting with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association in Abuja on Tuesday. Tunji-Ojo also emphasized that companies obstructing the Nigeria Immigration Service’s operations would face severe consequences. He stated that the days of businesses evading immigration laws are over, and private sector entities must allow the Immigration Service to perform its duties.

Regarding immigration service fees, the Minister acknowledged the need for adjustments and revealed that after negotiations, a new fee structure would be finalized. This revised system, including updated fees, will be in place starting May 1, 2025. The amnesty program will run through July 2025, and from August 1, the government will strictly enforce the crackdown on irregular migrants.
