Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, addressed concerns during a briefing after the Federal Executive Council meeting, reassuring the public that preparations are ongoing for the successful rollout of the President’s flagship initiative.

The postponement of the scheme’s launch, initially slated for Thursday, sparked speculations about its fate. However, Onanuga clarified that the delay is temporary, with efforts underway to finalize arrangements for its implementation. He assured that a new launch date would be announced promptly.

The student loan scheme, enacted into law as the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023, aims to facilitate access to interest-free loans for financially disadvantaged students pursuing tertiary education in Nigeria.

Spearheaded by Femi Gbajabiamila, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chief of Staff to the President, the legislation establishes the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. This fund is entrusted with the responsibility of managing loan requests, grants, disbursements, and recovery processes.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, as outlined in the legislation, will oversee the screening and processing of student loan applications received from higher institutions across the country.

In light of these developments, the Federal Government emphasizes its commitment to the implementation of the student loan scheme as a critical tool for promoting access to higher education and empowering Nigerian youth.
