The announcement was made via a statement on Tuesday by the ministry’s Director of Information, Ben Bem Goong, who revealed that the disease was identified on a farm in the state’s northwest region.

The ministry emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Understanding the Risks

Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is a zoonotic disease affecting warm-blooded animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, and horses, as well as humans. It is categorized as a notifiable disease by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) due to its high potential for morbidity and mortality.

Symptoms in Humans and Animals:

• Vomiting and nausea
• Coughing
• Diarrhea
• Sore throat and swollen lymph nodes
• Headaches and itching
• Bleeding from major openings

The statement highlighted that while the disease is preventable through measures such as risk assessments, vaccination campaigns, and prompt responses, early detection remains key to curbing its spread.

Action Plan

The government has urged neighboring states to implement swift actions to halt the transmission. It also called on the public to stay vigilant, report unusual health symptoms in humans and animals, and adhere to preventive guidelines provided by health authorities.
