Flying Eagles Revive Knockout Hopes With Dramatic 3-2 Victory Over Saudi Arabia
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles revived their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia in Talca, Chile, on Friday morning. The result breathed new life into their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages after a disappointing opening-day defeat to Norway.
According to Ireporter Online, the seven-time African champions started on the front foot, with midfielder Nasiru Salihu scoring Nigeria’s first goal of the tournament in the 10th minute. The Saudis, however, quickly responded through Amar Alyuhaybi, who equalised in the 21st minute.
The Flying Eagles regained control shortly before halftime when Amos Ochoche calmly slotted home in the 38th minute. Yet, Saudi Arabia refused to bow, as Talal Haji struck six minutes after the restart to level the match once more.
With the contest heading towards a draw, captain Daniel Bameyi showed nerves of steel in stoppage time, converting a penalty to hand Nigeria a decisive victory in dramatic fashion.
The crucial win places Nigeria in a stronger position in Group F with three points, leaving them just one step away from securing qualification. A favorable result against Colombia in their final group game on Monday will ensure their progression to the Round of 16.
