Ex-Sierra Leone president under house arrest amid coup investigation

Former Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma has been placed under home confinement, according to the government, following his questioning over what they describe as an attempted coup in late November.

Although Koroma’s office denies that he is under house arrest, Information Minister Chernor Bah stated that after being questioned again on Saturday, he was released with the condition that he remains on his property and cannot leave the house without permission from the inspector general of police.

Visits are limited to three family members and three party members until he meets with the police inspector again on Monday.

The government initiated an investigation into clashes that occurred at the end of last month when armed attackers stormed military and police facilities, resulting in 21 deaths. Koroma was summoned for questioning in connection to the incidents.

This development comes amid a series of coups in West Africa since 2020, with military takeovers occurring in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea.
