Former Super Eagles Coach Diagnosed With Critical Cancer, Sparks Concern
Former Super Eagles head coach Clemens Westerhof has been diagnosed with colon cancer and is reportedly in critical condition at a hospital in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
The development was disclosed by his wife, Lilian, who said the 86-year-old Dutch football tactician was receiving treatment at Rijnstate Hospital after being admitted on Wednesday.
According to Lilian, the cancer diagnosis came as a devastating blow to the family, particularly as Westerhof had already been battling Alzheimer’s disease before the latest health complication.
“The doctor just told us he has colon cancer and we are all devastated. He is in a critical condition and emotional, talking about our two daughters. He wants to live. We need help. We need prayers,” she said.
Westerhof’s wife also expressed concerns about the medical care he was receiving at the Arnhem hospital, suggesting that she was dissatisfied with the situation and hoped to transfer him to a better-equipped medical facility in Amsterdam or Germany.
“They appear to have given up. I don’t understand,” Lilian said, voicing her concerns about her husband’s treatment.
The family’s appeal has drawn attention to the health challenges facing the former coach, who played a significant role in one of the most celebrated periods in Nigerian football history.
Westerhof guided Nigeria’s senior national team to its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualification in 1994 before leading the Super Eagles to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia that same year.
Under his leadership, Nigeria also finished second at the 1990 AFCON and secured third place at the 1992 edition. His tenure further saw the Super Eagles rise to fifth in the FIFA world rankings, marking a historic achievement for Nigerian and African football.
Westerhof’s contribution to Nigerian football remains significant, with his achievements helping establish the Super Eagles as a formidable force on the continent and on the global stage.
As the former coach undergoes treatment, his family is hoping for improved medical care and has appealed for prayers and support during what it describes as a difficult period.
