FRSC Issues Stern Warning: Stop Scooping Fuel From Crashed Tankers
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged Nigerians to cease the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from crashed trucks carrying petroleum products…READ MORE…
In a statement made on Monday in Abuja, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted the alarming increase in crashes and fatalities, particularly those linked to the illegal removal of fuel from fallen tankers.
Mohammed expressed concern over the rising number of deaths from such activities, especially in Niger and Jigawa states, where scooping from crashed tankers has led to deadly incidents.
He identified key causes of accidents, including the illegal transportation of people in haulage vehicles, overloading, and fatigue, all contributing to crashes with multiple fatalities.
Reflecting on a troubling series of incidents between December 2024 and January 2025, Mohammed pointed to five major crashes that resulted in devastating loss of life. These tragic events underscore the significant toll on road safety, as 37 critical crashes accounted for nearly 40% of all traffic-related deaths.
The FRSC boss condemned these preventable accidents and stressed that human error remains a major cause. Moving forward, the Corps plans to partner with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to raise public awareness about the dangers of fuel scooping and work with tanker unions to address the frequent crashes.
Additionally, Mohammed advised passengers against boarding goods trucks and trailers, cautioning all road users to avoid excessive speed and overloading for safer travel in 2025.
