As of October, the official petrol price stands at N1,030 per liter, with independent stations charging N1,200 to N1,300, depending on location. Increases in recent months, especially on October 9 and October 29, have sparked frustration over the economic strain and the seeming lack of regulation.

Vehicle owners, including commercial drivers, share grievances about fuel stations adjusting pumps to shortchange customers. According to Tayo Adedeji, a cab driver in Abuja, pump manipulation has become commonplace, even as fuel prices soar.

In Lagos, drivers like Uchenna Godwin report widespread under-dispensing, with only certain stations like NNPC maintaining consumer trust. Many consumers are forced to seek alternative ways to avoid being cheated, such as using jerry cans to measure fuel accurately.

George Ene-Ita, Head of Public Affairs at NMDPRA, stressed that stations caught manipulating pumps will face strict penalties, including possible closure. The agency reassured the public of ongoing monitoring, although challenges remain

The Association of Public Policy Analysis urged closer regulation, noting that many stations exploit the lack of daily monitoring to manipulate fuel amounts. Advocates stress the need for a quick and responsive system to protect consumers and ensure fair practices in fuel distribution.
