Lionel Messi has once again reminded football fans of his extraordinary goalscoring ability after recording his ninth career match with four or more goals.

The Argentine superstar achieved the feat on August 29, 2026, scoring four goals and providing an assist as Inter Miami secured a commanding 7-1 victory over CF Montréal. The performance also marked his first four-goal haul in Major League Soccer and his first such outing since leaving Barcelona.

Messi’s first four-goal performance came on April 6, 2010, when Barcelona defeated Arsenal 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. The forward scored a first-half hat-trick before completing his remarkable display with a fourth goal late in the match.

Two years later, Messi produced another spectacular performance against Valencia, scoring four goals as Barcelona cruised to a 5-1 La Liga victory on February 19, 2012.

He followed that with another four-goal masterclass against Espanyol on May 5, 2012, scoring every goal in Barcelona’s 4-0 victory in the Catalan derby.

Messi continued his remarkable run on January 27, 2013, when he scored four times in Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Osasuna. The performance also saw him reach the 200-goal mark in La Liga.

His next four-goal outing came on September 19, 2017, as Barcelona defeated Eibar 6-1 at Camp Nou, with Messi once again proving decisive in front of goal.

On February 22, 2020, the Argentine repeated the feat against Eibar, scoring four goals in a 5-0 Barcelona victory. It was his final four-goal performance before his departure from the Spanish giants.

His latest effort in Miami has now added another memorable chapter to his career, with Messi scoring four times against Montréal and contributing an assist in Inter Miami’s record-breaking seven-goal victory.

Beyond his four-goal performances, Messi has also produced two five-goal masterclasses. His most famous came on March 7, 2012, when he scored all five goals in Barcelona’s 7-1 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen, becoming the first player in the modern Champions League era to achieve the feat in a knockout match.

Messi also scored five goals for Argentina in a 5-0 friendly victory over Estonia on June 5, 2022. That remains his only international match in which he has scored four or more goals.

From his unforgettable Barcelona performances to his latest exploits in Major League Soccer, Messi has continued to demonstrate an exceptional ability to dominate matches and produce extraordinary scoring displays even at the latter stages of his career.
