The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently apprehended the clergyman over accusations of defrauding church members and Nigerians through fake grants purportedly from the Ford Foundation.
Ebonyi allegedly enticed victims, including NGOs and individuals, with promises of grants totaling $20 billion to aid the less privileged, using his NGO, Theobarth Global Foundation, as a front.
Reports indicate that Ebonyi used the ill-gotten gains to amass substantial assets, including a 23-room hotel, a pure water factory, two blocks of a primary school, two bungalow offices in Nyanya-Gwandara, New Karu, Abuja, and a five-bedroom duplex in Karsana, Abuja. Additionally, he acquired a live broadcast channel equipped with studio facilities for his foundation.
The alleged scam involved persuading victims to subscribe to the phony grant scheme by paying for registration forms and clusters, each group shelling out N1.8 million. Through this scheme, Ebonyi reportedly amassed the staggering sum of N1.3 billion from unsuspecting victims and NGOs.
The EFCC, in a statement by spokesman Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the Ford Foundation disowned any association with Ebonyi and his NGO, clarifying that they had no connection with the fraudulent activities.
Despite his arrest and ongoing EFCC probe, Ebonyi purportedly continues to reach out to subscribers via social media, promoting his fake grant from the Ford Foundation.
The images provided in the report offer a glimpse into the luxurious properties allegedly acquired by Ebonyi using proceeds from his criminal activities, shedding light on the extent of his fraudulent dealings.
