Governor Wike Moves To Legalise Ban On Open Grazing

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, sent a bill to the state House of Assembly to legalise the resolution of the 17 southern governors on open grazing ban in his domain.

He explained that the bill, which he would sign into law as soon as he received it from the House, was aimed at protecting farmlands, women, youths and all residents of the state from killer herdsmen.

A statement issued by his Special Media Assistant, Kelvin Ebiri, quoted the governor as saying that the anti-open grazing bill will be sent to the State House of Assembly for speedy consideration.

Wike stated this yesterday at the commissioning of the Isaiah Odoli/Omerelu streets in New GRA Phase 1 in Obio-Akpor Council of the state.

“Everybody must understand that we must legalise anti-open grazing to protect our farms, women and youths so that nobody kills them again,” he said.

Wike restated that Nigerians, who chose the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, should be regretting the deplorable condition of the country under the APC.

Wike lamented that Nigeria was currently on life support and required prayers from Nigerians to salvage the county, adding that since APC came into power, Nigeria had taken a turn for the worse with killings and abductions daily across the country.

Former President of the Senate, David Mark, who inaugurated the project, said Rivers people were lucky to have a governor who fulfils his promises and provides an infrastructure with a human touch.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi, said prior to its reconstruction, the streets were narrow and had plenty of potholes and ruts.

BESIDES, six days after Wike vowed to withhold salaries of members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), the union resumed work yesterday at the State House of Assembly.

A visit to the complex showed that the workers were opening and cleaning their offices after their two months strike over disagreements with the government on financial autonomy to the legislature.

State Chairman of PASAN, Mrs Comfort Otuene, who confirmed the resumption, said, its members complied with the directive to resume work after the National Executive Council (NEC) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Government’s delegation.
