Gowon made the disclosure at the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organized by the Plateau State Government. He recounted how Obasanjo was arrested by Abacha and sentenced to death for allegedly plotting to overthrow the regime, despite his claims of innocence.

Obasanjo was imprisoned for three years before his release in 1998, following Abacha’s sudden death on June 8 that year. While Gowon attended the event as Special Guest of Honour, Obasanjo served as the Guest of Honour.

Gowon shared that he had written to Abacha, urging him to use his leadership to promote goodness rather than evil.
