Herdsmen Allegedly Destroy Five-Hectare Rice Plantation In Ogun

According to a statement by the Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, on Monday, the herdsmen caused significant damage to the crops. Upon realizing they were being observed, they fled the scene, leaving one cow behind.

The farmland owner, Julius, reported the incident to the Ilupeju Police Division. In response, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, directed the Divisional Police Officer to organize an emergency meeting with community leaders and representatives from both the farming and herding communities to prevent further conflict.

Odutola stated, “In a commendable act of proactive policing, the Ogun State Police Command has successfully averted potential farmers/herders clashes following the farmland destruction in Ilupeju Ibaro Village.

“Mr. Okegbenro Julius of Favour CDA, Imala Elega, reported that at around 6 p.m., herdsmen and their cattle invaded his rice plantation, causing extensive destruction. A security guard on the farm recorded video evidence of the incident. When the herdsmen realized they were being filmed, they fled, leaving one cow behind.”

Commissioner Ogunlowo assured residents that the police are committed to maintaining peace and protecting all citizens. Efforts are ongoing to engage all parties involved and prevent future disputes.

Farmers and Herders Resolve Dispute in Mowe Community

In another incident, farmers and herders in the Mowe community have reached an agreement after a clash involving the killing of six cows.

Odutola reported that the dispute began on Thursday when six cows belonging to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders of Nigeria, Agege Chapter, were killed, and one injured. The Miyetti Allah Chairman, Alhaji Muhammed, identified the Baale of Amu Village, Abiodun Ogunyemi, as the prime suspect.

The police promptly arrested Ogunyemi and launched an investigation. To prevent escalation, Commissioner Ogunlowo directed the Mowe Divisional Police Officer to mediate between the two parties.

During the mediation, both sides agreed to reconcile and pledged to avoid future conflicts. As part of the resolution, villagers consented to designate specific grazing areas for the herders.
