While the United Nations recommends conducting a population census every decade, Nigeria has not completed one since 2006, resulting in a significant 18-year gap in demographic data. The census was initially scheduled for 2023, but delays and missed deadlines under former President Muhammadu Buhari led to its postponement. The decision to push the census to 2025 was made to allow the new administration to oversee the process. Kwarra emphasized the critical need for accurate population data, which is crucial for informed decision-making, particularly in addressing issues such as reproductive health, maternal mortality, and the equitable allocation of resources.
